Portuguese tennis player Nuno Borges, the national number one and 41st in the world ranking, was eliminated on Monday in the first round of the US Open, the Grand Slam tournament held annually in New York.
Borges lost the match against American Learner Tien, who is ranked 15th in the world ranking, failing to get past the first round of the tournament.
This defeat represents a disappointment for the Portuguese player, who arrived at the US Open with the status of the best Portuguese player on the professional circuit. The match took place on Monday, the first day of competition at the North American Grand Slam.
