Overpopulation in animal shelters is one of the main challenges currently faced by these facilities, according to the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Affairs (DGAV).
The policy for managing companion animal populations is based on an integrated model that combines several strategies. This model includes animal sterilisation, identification and registration, adoption promotion, responsible ownership, and prevention of abandonment.
According to the DGAV, the coordinated implementation of these measures aims to efficiently control the number of animals in shelters and ensure animal welfare. The model seeks to address the problem holistically, tackling the causes of overpopulation rather than merely dealing with its consequences.
