The European Commission announced that ChatGPT is now covered by the Digital Services Act rules, which means the platform will have to comply with additional obligations imposed by European legislation.
According to Brussels' decision, OpenAI, the company responsible for ChatGPT, will have to assess and mitigate systemic risks associated with its service and algorithmic systems.
This measure falls within the scope of the regulation's application that aims to regulate large digital services in the European Union, establishing transparency and accountability requirements for large-scale technological platforms.
The European Commission did not specify what deadlines exist for implementing the new obligations nor did it detail what types of systemic risks it considers most relevant for ChatGPT.
