Portugal: Kiala wants to take Black authors out of the exception and bring them to the center of the publishing market
The publishing imprint Kiala was founded by Elga Fontes and entered the market in May with the objective of combating the under-representation of Black authors in literature. The publisher's mission is to show that these authors' works are not limited to stories about racism, discrimination, or suffering, challenging the stereotypes that frequently limit the visibility of these writers in the publishing market.
The imprint plans to publish two books in 2026 and already has the 2027 catalog completely defined, demonstrating a structured and sustained growth strategy for the coming years. This advance planning reflects Kiala's ambition to establish itself as a reference in the Portuguese publishing sector.
The initiative emerges in a context where the representation of Black authors in traditional publishers remains limited, frequently relegating these writers to specific themes related to racial issues, rather than recognizing the diversity and breadth of their literary creations.
