ZERO alerts to a decrease in the quality of bathing waters

The environmental organization ZERO alerted to a decrease in the quality of bathing waters in Portugal. This conclusion was based on the comparative analysis of status reports published by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), referring to the summer months of the years 2025 and 2026.

The study revealed a significant increase of 143% in the interdiction of bathing areas during the analyzed period. This drastic rise is mainly due to problems of microbiological contamination of the waters.

The entities responsible for monitoring the quality of coastal and river waters in Portugal are the APA and the DGS, which regularly monitor these areas during the bathing season. The data analyzed by ZERO demonstrates a deterioration of conditions between the two consecutive summer years.
