Inspections of the historic funiculars in the city of Lisbon are still ongoing. The equipment affected are the Bica Funicular, the Lavra Funicular, and the Santa Justa Elevator, all belonging to Carris.
The suspension of these historic equipment came as a result of the derailment of the Glória Elevator, which occurred on September 3, 2025. This accident resulted in 16 deaths and 24 injured, affecting both Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.
The Lisbon City Council made the decision to immediately suspend the operation of Carris' historic equipment following the accident. The objective of the inspections is to evaluate the safety of each of these elevators before they are possibly reopened to the public.
