The United States Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, met with his Russian counterpart, the Russian Finance Minister, Anton Siluanov, on the sidelines of a G20 meeting. The encounter took place in Saudi Arabia and marks one of the highest-level contacts between Washington and Moscow since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
According to the U.S. media, the meeting focused on President Donald Trump's peace plan for Ukraine. However, Russia did not confirm whether that was effectively the content discussed during the meeting between the two officials.
The absence of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has been hindering the diplomatic efforts of the Trump administration. The U.S. President has been pressing both parties to reach a peace agreement, but so far no significant progress has been made.
European members contested the Russian presence at the meeting, expressing concern about what they consider to be an approximation between the United States and Russia, without the latter having demonstrated a real willingness to end the conflict in Ukraine.
