Iran sentences two women to death for participation in anti-government protests

Two women were sentenced to death in Iran for participation in anti-government protests, according to information from human rights groups released on Monday. The sentences were handed down in separate trials, but related to incidents recorded in the city of Isfahan, one of the locations where demonstrations occurred during a national mobilization that peaked on January 8 and 9 of this year.

One of the convicted is Taraneh Rahimi, 20 years old, as reported by the Hengaw group and the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). The young woman was found responsible for allegedly inciting people to commit crimes during the protests.

Amid the conflict against the United States, initiated by an attack by Israel and the US on Iranian territory on February 28, Iran has already executed 29 men on charges related to the protests, according to the Iran Human Rights (IHR) NGO, based in Norway. So far, no woman had been executed for the same reason, which makes these convictions a significant precedent in the context of the repression of protests in the country.
