Slovenian rider Tadej Pogacar was successfully operated on his left collarbone at a hospital in Barcelona. The surgical intervention proceeded without complications and the cyclist remained hospitalized for a few days before being discharged to return home and begin the rehabilitation process.
The accident that caused the fracture occurred while Pogacar was wearing the red jersey of the Vuelta a España, a race in which he was attempting to conquer the only grand tour that was still not on his record. The fall thus ended his attempt to complete the trio of victories in the three grand tours (Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España).
Pogacar, considered one of the best cyclists of the current era, saw his participation in the Vuelta a España abruptly interrupted, leaving behind the expectations he had placed on this race as one of the main favorites for overall victory.
