Chega convenes party bodies for "final decision" on motion of censure

RTP Notícias31 August 2026 at 18:20

The president of Chega will meet on Monday and Tuesday the national leadership and parliamentary group of the party to take a "final decision" on presenting a motion of censure to the Government. The meetings take place on consecutive days, suggesting the party intends to accelerate the internal deliberation process on this political issue.

In addition to the internal meetings, the Chega leader also asked for "a conversation" with the President of the Republic, which indicates the party is seeking support or, at the very least, heard the position of the head of State before proceeding with the motion of censure. This consultation with the President suggests that Chega's decision may depend, in part, on the outcome of that contact.

The motion of censure is a parliamentary instrument that, if approved, would lead to the fall of the Government. The fact that Chega is formally considering this option indicates a worsening of the relationship between the party and the executive, at a time of political tension that the party now intends to resolve through these meetings and contacts with the Presidency.
