Lisbon reinforces tsunami alert system with new sirens on the waterfront

Lisbon will further reinforce the tsunami warning and alert system this year with the installation of two new sirens on the waterfront and the relocation of existing equipment. The municipal council announced that the new sirens will be installed at Jardim Sá da Bandeira, in Misericórdia, and near Santa Apolónia Station, two areas with high circulation of residents, workers, and visitors.

These measures result from technical studies and civil protection exercises carried out in recent months, which identified the need to expand coverage in the most vulnerable zones of the city. The intention is to increase sound warning capacity in an urban strip particularly exposed to tsunami risk, between Belém and Santa Apolónia.

The reinforcement of the system aims to improve the response and protection capacity of populations against extreme coastal risks, reinforcing security on the waterfront through sound warnings that allow timely evacuation in case of emergency.
