YouTube implemented a new view counting model that considers a view from the first frame of a video when the user hovers over it. This system, described as "exposure-based," replaces the previous model that required more significant interaction from the viewer to register a view.
The new model applies to various content formats on the platform, including short videos, long videos, podcasts and live streams. This change represents a significant alteration in how YouTube measures audience engagement with its content.
As a result of the new methodology, view counts are expected to be inflated, since any hover over a video already counts as a view. This can give the impression of greater reach for content creators.
However, despite the increase in reported view counts, the change in the counting model does not alter how creators are paid. Revenue generated from ad views continues to be calculated based on criteria that were not affected by this update.
