John Galliano cancels Met Gala retrospective exhibition following racist controversy

Euronews Portugal31 August 2026 at 16:17

John Galliano cancelled the retrospective that was scheduled to be presented before the 2027 Met Gala. The exhibition, which was meant to be a celebration of his career, was annulled following the controversy generated by his past racist and anti-Semitic comments.

The designer publicly apologised again. The offensive statements Galliano had previously made had generated strong indignation and led to boycotts in the fashion industry.

The Met Gala, one of the most prestigious events in the global fashion calendar, was prepared to host the creator's retrospective. The organisation is said to have been informed of the cancellation decision in the last few hours.

This is not the first time Galliano has faced consequences for his comments. In 2011, the stylist lost his position as creative director at Maison Dior due to a similar scandal, taking years to manage to rehabilitate his professional image.
