Five days after a furious flash flood swept through the mountain passes of Nepal, authorities in the city of Bharatpur, more than 160 kilometers from where the floods initially struck, transported hundreds of bodies for a mass burial in a local forest. With no capacity to preserve the bodies arriving at their shores, the decision was made despite outrage from family members.
In the area, relatives arrived after long journeys searching for anything that could identify their loved ones among the hundreds of mutilated bodies. In a hall in the city, men and women stared at a small television, watching in complete silence a presentation of photos of the recovered remains. Beside it, another government hall was being converted into a makeshift morgue.
