The Finance Minister, Dario Durigan, said that the fiscal adjustment needs to be made daily and with democratic respect, without imposing measures based solely on spreadsheets. He participated in the Macro Day 2026 event, held by BTG Pactual bank in São Paulo, where authorities, politicians, and economists gathered to discuss the country's economic and political situation. The conversation was conducted by BTG Pactual's chief economist, Mansueto Almeida.
Durigan highlighted that, although the government has always sought to carry out a faster and stronger fiscal adjustment, dialogue and political articulation are indispensable for any measure in this regard. The minister criticized the approach of seeking results at any cost, regardless of consensus with society.
The minister also said that the debate about the need for social programs in Brazil, considering the history of inequality, violence, and disrespect toward minorities and women, has already been won and consolidated. According to Durigan, the current discussion is no longer about the existence of these policies, but rather about how to implement them sustainably.
