Marius Borg Høiby, 29, son of Norway's now queen consort, Mette-Marit, was authorized by Norwegian police to attend the funeral of King Harald V, his step-grandfather. Høiby is currently under house arrest with an electronic ankle monitor while awaiting the decision on his appeal against a four-year prison sentence for rape.
Prosecutor Oda Karterud told AFP that the prosecution deemed it appropriate to grant the release requests submitted by Høiby. The specific authorization for funeral attendance was granted by the police, with the event scheduled for September 9.
King Harald V died on Friday at age 89. On the eve of his death, Høiby had already received other authorizations to leave his house arrest, according to Norwegian police. With the king's death, his son Haakon became Norway's new king.
