Canada responds to Trump and installs plaque on Lake Ontario after American changes name to 'Lake America'

United States President Donald Trump signed a decree to change the name of Lake Ontario, located between Canada and the United States, to "Lake America." The measure is part of a broader dispute between the two countries, which intensified after the failure of trade negotiations and the imposition of new tariffs by Washington.

Two days after Trump's decision, Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded symbolically by installing a plaque on the Canadian side of the lake with the message: "Lake Ontario. Now and forever." Ford also published a video statement criticizing the renaming attempt.

Ford stated that long before Trump and long after he leaves office, the lake will continue to be called Lake Ontario. The Canadian premier used a firm tone to defend sovereignty over the name of the lake, which is shared between the two countries.

Trump, for his part, published a series of AI-generated videos about the lake over the weekend. The verbal dispute between the two leaders occurs in the context of growing trade tensions, with Washington imposing new tariffs on Canada.
