The European Commission designated ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs), which obliges them to comply with additional obligations under the Digital Services Act. This designation means that these platforms will have to implement stricter content moderation and transparency measures.
ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, now has a four-month deadline to adapt and comply with all the new obligations imposed by European legislation. The companies responsible for these platforms will have to guarantee greater oversight and responsibility over the content circulating on their interfaces.
The Digital Services Act establishes a set of rules designed to protect European users, including transparency mechanisms and accountability of platforms for illegal or harmful content. This legislation represents an effort by the European Union to regulate the digital space more rigorously.
The inclusion of ChatGPT on this list marks a significant moment in the regulation of artificial intelligence in Europe, as this is one of the first times that a generative AI-based tool is directly affected by this type of legislation. Reddit and Roblox, which already have millions of users in Europe, are equally subject to this greater supervision.
