Neutralization protocol: behind the scenes of the safety that saves lives on every space launch

Euronews Portugal31 August 2026 at 12:19

The Flight Safety Division monitors the Ariane 6 rocket trajectory in real time during space launches. This division has the responsibility to continuously monitor the rocket's performance from takeoff to stage separation, ensuring that the mission proceeds within the planned parameters.

The engineers in this division have the ability to order the automatic neutralization of the rocket should any problem be detected that puts the safety of the population or the teams involved in the operation at risk. This security measure aims to protect lives in case of failures during flight.

Euronews spoke with one of the engineers responsible for ensuring that all operations proceed without problems. The engineer explained the behind-the-scenes of this security protocol that is essential for every space launch.

The neutralization protocol represents an additional layer of safety that allows the mission to be aborted in a controlled manner, minimizing the risks associated with space launches and ensuring the protection of people and equipment on the ground.
