The Lisbon Stock Exchange closed Monday's session on August 31st with a gain of 0.49% to 9,476.94 points, defying the negative trend of the major European stock exchanges. The German DAX fell 0.82%, the French CAC 40 slipped 0.01% and the Dutch AEX broke down 0.04%. Only the Spanish IBEX 35 and the Italian FTSE MIB closed in the green, while the British FTSE 100 was closed due to the Summer Bank Holiday.
Among the biggest gains in Lisbon, Galp Energia stood out with 2.64% to 21.38 euros, followed by Ibersol with 0.77% to 10.44 euros and BCP with 0.54% to 1.12 euros. Sonae, EDP, Jerónimo Martins, Corticeira Amorim, EDP Renováveis, REN and NOS also gained value. In the red were Mota-Engil with 1.16% drop, Teixeira Duarte with 0.63% and Semapa with 0.48%, in addition to CTT and Navigator.
Oil prices surged with brent rising 5.8% to 91.15 dollars and crude gaining 3.63% to 86.43 dollars. The rise is due to the new attacks between the United States and Iran that occurred over the weekend. The United States attacked Larak island while Iran attacked American bases in Jordan, in addition to the economic sanctions announced by the United States against Iran.
On the foreign exchange market, the euro rose 0.11% against the dollar to 1.15976 dollars and gained 0.07% against the pound to 0.85655 pounds.
