Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja was sentenced to two years in prison this Friday by a Seoul court. She was tried on charges of providing illegal political funds and bribery. The conviction relates to the delivery of luxury gifts, including two Chanel bags and a diamond necklace, to the country's then-first lady, Kim Keon Hee, wife of ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Han Hak-ja is 83 years old and assumed leadership of the Unification Church after the death of her husband, church founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon, in 2012. Among the church's followers, she is known as the "True Mother." The religious leader has been in prison since September 2025, when she was detained to await trial. The Seoul court decided on the conviction after considering the bribery charges proven.
