Unemployment rate in July falls to 5.7%

The unemployment rate stood at 5.7% in July, remaining the same as the value recorded in June. This data represents a decrease of 0.1 percentage points compared to the same month the previous year.

The data is provisional and was released today by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The INE is the body responsible for producing official statistics in Portugal.

Unemployment stabilizes, economy grows and inflation rises, according to INE data

According to INE data released today, the unemployment rate remained at 5.7% in July, the Portuguese economy grew 2.5% in the second quarter year-on-year and inflation rose to 3.3% in August, driven mainly by rising fuel prices. The employed population reached 5.347 million people and the inactivity rate fell to 29.6%, the lowest value since February 1998. GDP grew 0.8% compared to the first quarter, with net external demand being decisive for this acceleration. At the same time, the tourist accommodation sector recorded 46.5 million overnight stays in the first seven months of the year, an increase of 1.5%, and total revenues of 4,073.2 million euros.
