Resident overnight stays grow 5% in July and boost tourism

SAPO Notícias31 August 2026 at 11:22

Portuguese tourism recorded growth in July, with resident overnight stays increasing by 5.1%. This growth represents a positive signal for the sector, indicating that Portuguese people are choosing to travel within the country more often during the holiday period.

In contrast, non-resident overnight stays advanced only 0.7%, a significantly more modest growth. This difference between residents and non-residents suggests a different dynamic in the behavior of domestic travelers compared to foreign ones.

In total, overnight stays in Portugal rose 2.1% in July. This aggregate figure reflects the contribution of both segments, although growth was driven mainly by the increase in resident overnight stays.

The numbers are encouraging for the Portuguese tourism sector, which sees in the growth of domestic travel an indicator of recovery and economic dynamism in the country during the peak summer season.
