The European Union applied new stricter digital rules to ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox under the Digital Services Act. Brussels classified ChatGPT as a search engine, which implies additional obligations of transparency and content moderation. This classification is significant because search engines face more complex requirements compared to other services.
Reddit and Roblox were categorized as Very Large Online Platforms, a classification reserved for platforms with more than 45 million monthly users in the European Union. This category requires compliance with more severe obligations regarding security, protection of minors and combating disinformation.
All three companies now have a four-month deadline to comply with the new established rules. This period aims to allow the adaptation of systems and internal procedures to the European regulatory requirements.
The Digital Services Act represents the biggest overhaul of digital rules in the European Union in two decades and applies differently depending on the type and size of platforms, seeking to balance freedom of expression with user protection.
