Norway's most unusual walk passes along the Russian border. At the far north of Europe, a landscape apparently belonging only to nature hides one of the most sensitive places on the continent. Birch forests, tundra, rivers and vast horizons dominate the territory, but as you approach the border it becomes evident that this is one of the most monitored places in Europe.
The border between Norway and Russia stretches for about 198 kilometres and is monitored by the authorities of both countries. Unlike many European borders, here the international line is not necessarily protected by a huge physical barrier. In several points, it is the markers, surveillance and military presence that make the separation evident.
