The prison system of Rio de Janeiro may be about to receive a new criminal faction. A dissidence from Povo de Israel (PVI) began organizing itself inside Rio de Janeiro prisons after the death of the original faction's leader, Avelino Gonçalves Lima, 54 years old, last year. The new group was named Primeiro Comando do Golpe and could become the fifth criminal organization in the state.
The movement of the new group has already caused conflicts inside prisons, with reports of gallery fires, beatings and death threats among inmates. The Povo de Israel faction had been born inside prisons and does not have external territories, unlike other criminal organizations.
To try to contain the advance of Primeiro Comando do Golpe, the state Secretary of Prison Police (Seppen) mobilized the intelligence sector of the department. The objective is to identify the inmates involved in organizing the new faction and apply disciplinary and security measures, including the isolation of prisoners linked to the group.
