Rede Expressos will integrate Badajoz into its national network from September 11, creating two daily connections in each direction between Badajoz and Lisbon. The route passes through Borba, Estremoz, Évora and Montemor-o-Novo, allowing direct connection between these Alentejo towns and the Spanish city, in addition to access to the rest of the national network. Departures from Badajoz to Lisbon are scheduled for 07:15 and 13:30, while in the opposite direction they depart at 14:30 and 17:30. The offer also includes connections to Lisbon Airport, with online tickets starting from 10 euros.
The company aims to address the growing mobility between the Alentejo and the Spanish Extremadura, a cross-border area where economic, professional and social relations have been intensifying. According to data from El País, approximately 8,600 vehicles travel daily in Badajoz associated with commuting between Portugal and Spain. Data from Rádio Elvas indicates that around 358,000 vehicles crossed the Caia border during July and August 2025, making it the second most used road border between the two countries.
The labor component assumes a growing weight in this cross-border mobility, exemplified by the EURES Cross-Border Extremadura-Alentejo project, developed in partnership by the public employment services of both countries to support workers who live on one side of the border and work on the other. Nelson Silva, director-general of Rede Expressos, states that the integration of Badajoz into the national network represents an important development, enabling the facilitation of regular travel and providing access to a wider network of destinations in Portugal.
With this new connection, Rede Expressos seeks to reduce dependence on the car in cross-border travel and strengthen the Elvas-Badajoz axis as a mobility corridor between the Alentejo and Spain, bringing the Alentejo towns closer to one of the main cities of the Spanish Extremadura.
