On Tuesday night, August 26, 1997, Benidorm Police received an emergency call from an apartment in the city center. A woman and her children were being held hostage by her husband, a French citizen who minutes earlier had attempted suicide by hanging himself from the bathroom partition.
A special operations unit, the GEO, went to the scene and spent two hours negotiating with the man to abandon any violent attitude and release the family.
Taking advantage of her husband's inattention, the woman managed to grab the keys and throw them out the window. When the agents burst into the apartment and asked T.B.D., 36 years old, why he wanted to end his life and prevent his family from leaving, he only responded: «Je ne veux pas retourner» (I don't want to go back).
