Mozambique/Attacks: Almost 85% of children in Cabo Delgado live below the poverty line – Unicef

SAPO Notícias31 August 2026 at 07:09

Almost 85% of children in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, live in households below the poverty line, according to data from the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef). This statistic reflects the severe situation of vulnerability in which the child population of the northern Mozambican province finds itself.

According to the same Unicef report, 228 thousand children in the region are displaced due to the armed conflict affecting the province since 2017. This displacement situation significantly aggravates the living conditions of these children and their families.

The Unicef document also reveals that 45% of children in Cabo Delgado suffer from chronic malnutrition, which represents a serious public health problem in the region. This high rate of malnutrition is directly related to extreme poverty and the displacement caused by the conflict.

The Unicef data highlights the humanitarian crisis affecting children in Cabo Delgado, where the combination of armed conflict, extreme poverty and food insecurity creates devastating conditions for the child population of the province.
