The Spanish Government approved two weeks ago the extension of the operating license of the Almaraz nuclear power plant, located in the province of Cáceres. The Ministry for the Ecological Transition, led by Vice President Sara Aagesen, authorized in the middle of August the postponement of the plant's closure until June 2030.
Previously, closure dates were planned for 2027 and 2028, corresponding to the two reactors of the facility. With this extension, those dates were changed to 2030.
Despite this extension of the operating license, the Spanish Executive intends to continue with the work it had already begun to design the closure and dismantling process of the nuclear power plant. That is, the preparations for the closure of the facility will proceed as planned, even with the authorization to operate longer.
