Europa: the hidden bill of scorching summers in national budgets

Euronews Portugal31 August 2026 at 06:00

Europe is experiencing another summer marked by extreme heat, severe drought and devastating wildfires, leaving a billion-dollar bill that will only become visible months later in the national budgets of the affected countries. Governments face hidden costs that include emergency aid to affected populations, compensation to farmers for lost crops, repair of infrastructure destroyed by wildfires and extreme weather events, as well as uncollected tax revenue due to the decline in economic activity.

The impacts also extend to European consumers' pockets, with food inflation reaching new highs due to reduced agricultural production. The chain of economic effects also includes increased energy and imported food prices to make up for internal production deficits.

Experts warn that these costs tend to repeat and worsen with the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in Europe, placing growing pressure on the public finances of member states and requiring more robust adaptation strategies.
