Turkey: "Odyssey" fever in Hollywood relaunches the question: did Homer write the epics in Izmir

The film "The Odyssey", directed by Christopher Nolan, has brought the ancient debate about Homer's origins and the authorship of the epics "Iliad" and "Odyssey" back into public discussion. The film's premiere in Hollywood has reignited worldwide interest in the mysterious figure of the poet who lived more than 2,700 years ago.

The debate now focuses on Izmir, the ancient city that today corresponds to Izmir, on the western coast of Türkiye. This city is considered by some scholars as the possible place of origin of Homer, although the question remains unresolved.

Archaeologist Aylin Ümit Erdem has been analyzing archaeological and historical clues that could establish a link between the poet and the city of Izmir. Her work aims to find evidence associating Homer with this territory.

However, despite research efforts, there remains a significant absence of direct physical proof that conclusively confirms that Homer wrote his epics in Izmir.
