The deposed president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, published photographs on social media this Sunday directly from the prison where he is being held in New York. This was the first time images of him had appeared since he was captured nine months ago by American military personnel.
Maduro appeared in the photographs with the caption "We remain steadfast," a message intended to convey firmness and resistance despite his detention. His whereabouts had been unknown since his capture.
Maduro was removed from power in Venezuela earlier this year, after a period of intense political instability in the country. The United States played a fundamental role in his downfall, having offered support to political adversaries who contested his legitimacy as president.
