Suspected fire consumed 11 hectares

About 11 hectares of eucalyptus grove and scrubland were consumed by the wildfire that broke out on Saturday night at the Furneira site, in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. The municipal protection service estimates that this was the total area affected by the flames.

The flames threatened several homes in the area, putting local residents at risk. The proximity of the fire to the homes prompted the intervention of civil protection authorities.

The Judicial Police are investigating the causes of the fire, at a time when suspicions of arson are being raised. The authorities have not yet officially confirmed the origin of the flames.
