Iceland says no to EU. Prime Minister speaks of "victory for democracy"

Icelanders rejected in a referendum the reopening of accession negotiations with the European Union, with 52.8% voting "no" and 47.2% voting "yes", a result that Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir called "a victory for democracy". The centre-left head of government stated that the executive will not resume negotiations during the current legislature, which ends in 2028, committing to respect the consultative result. The referendum, originally scheduled for 2027, was brought forward due to economic and geopolitical developments, including US President Donald Trump's threats regarding Greenland. Iceland is currently part of the European Economic Area and the Schengen area, and the refusal is expected to freeze any discussion on accession at least until the end of Frostadóttir's term.
