Amarante beat Benfica B 1-0 this Sunday, achieving their first ever victory in professional football championships. The match was part of the fourth round of II Liga, and the solitary goal came at 15 minutes, scored by Melvin, after a cross by Luís Machado on the right.
The Benfica B team, coached by Nélson Veríssimo, showed great difficulties during the first half. The red-and-whites displayed little aggression without the ball, failed to react effectively to loss of possession and showed few ideas in attack, rarely managing to create dangerous situations.
Amarante took advantage of the visitor's lethargy and proved more competent as a team. Luís Machado emerged as one of the main offensive threats for the home side, being the source of the play that led to the historic winning goal.
With this defeat, Benfica B could fall several places in the II Liga standings, suffering their first loss in this phase of the competition.
