A vessel with approximately 270 people shipwrecked in the waters near Cyprus. The boat had departed from the port of Kyrenia, in the north of the island, heading to the south of Turkiye, when it began taking on water about two kilometers from the coast.
Local authorities reported that 159 people have been rescued so far. Rescue efforts are ongoing to locate and save the remaining passengers who may still be in the water or in distress.
The incident occurred on a migratory route frequently used by people attempting to cross the Eastern Mediterranean toward Europe. The rescue operations involve emergency teams and Cypriot authorities.
