Beja among the districts with the most cases of "fake accident" scams

Rádio Campanário30 August 2026 at 12:17

Between January and June 2026, "fake accident" scams caused accumulated losses of 72,540 euros to victims in Portugal, a figure already close to the total recorded during the entire year of 2025, which was 77,480 euros. The Republican National Guard warned about the growing sophistication of these crimes and predicts that the financial impact of 2026 will far exceed that of the previous year.

The GNR recorded 30 complaints of this phenomenon in the first semester, representing an increase of 15.4% compared to the 26 cases reported in the same period of 2025. The district of Faro leads the incidence with six occurrences, followed by Lisbon, Porto, Viseu and Beja. In one of the recorded cases, the loss reached 15,450 euros.

In these crimes, suspects simulate non-existent collisions to demand immediate payments and directly access victims' cards and bank codes. The GNR emphasized that scammers use new extortion methods, which has contributed to the substantial worsening of losses.

Suspects deliberately choose drivers over 60 years old as targets, exploiting their emotional vulnerability, fear of legal complications and lesser familiarity with electronic payment methods, targeting a public that typically holds greater immediate financial availability.
