Personal debts in Niterói reached R$ 2.07 billion and show growth higher than the number of defaulters in the city. The situation reflects a growing indebtedness scenario among residents of the municipality.
The case of administrative assistant Rodrigo Santos, a resident of the Fonseca neighborhood, illustrates how many people ended up trapped in a cycle of debt. In 2021, he took out a R$ 20 thousand loan to pay off accumulated expenses.
Over time, Rodrigo started using the credit card to pay the loan installments and avoid late payments. The strategy initially worked, but the bills began to increase progressively.
When he realized, he was already using the card to pay the card itself and other bills, unable to keep up with the growth of the debt. The situation became unsustainable, exemplifying the reality faced by many Niterói residents in the face of growing indebtedness.
