Brazilian university revokes Salazar's Honorary Doctorate granted 85 years ago

ZAP Notícias30 August 2026 at 06:40

The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) annulled the Doctor Honoris Causa title that had been attributed to António de Oliveira Salazar in 1941, 85 years ago. The decision was approved last Thursday by a large majority by the University's Council of the institution.

At the time of the attribution, the university was called University of Brazil and Salazar was governing Portugal. The article notes that Getúlio Vargas helped make Salazar a doctor, during a period of rapprochement between two regimes that shared the same name: Estado Novo.

The University Council considered that maintaining the tribute today would be incompatible with the democratic and academic values of the university. The decision to revoke the title comes 85 years after its original concession.

The pulse between "yes" and "no" keeps Iceland on edge, with a slight advantage for the rejection of EU entry

The Icelandic referendum on reopening accession negotiations to the European Union, held on Saturday, shows a slight advantage for "no" with 51.1% against 49.8% for "yes", according to almost 80% of ballots counted. The result reversed the trend observed when 60% of votes were counted, when "yes" led by a minimal margin. The rejection comes from the most remote regions and urban areas, where counting is slower. The Electoral Authority warned that official results will be known at noon on Sunday.
