The pulse between "yes" and "no" kept Iceland in suspense after a referendum held on Saturday on reopening negotiations for the country's accession to the European Union, a process abandoned in 2013. With almost 80% of votes counted, the Icelandic public broadcaster, RUV, indicated a victory for "no" with 51.1%, against 49.8% of supporters of resuming talks.

The trend reversed in relation to what was observed with 60% of the count, when "yes" led by a very narrow margin. The final result remained uncertain due to the minimal difference between both positions.

The rejection came from the most remote regions and urban centers, where the vote count is carried out more slowly. The Electoral Authority warned that official results would only be known around noon on Sunday.
