Arya Satheesh, an 18-year-old Irish student, transformed a school project for monitoring water quality into an award-winning initiative. The project, called Eco Purge, seeks to address one of the problems associated with plastic pollution. Unlike many alternatives to conventional plastics, which only replace one material with another, Eco Purge proposes a different approach. It is a plant-based and biodegradable plastic that incorporates enzymes. As the material degrades, these enzymes are released and can act on certain microplastics present in the environment. According to ZME Science, microplastics represent a growing threat to ecosystems and human health, which makes this solution particularly relevant in the current context of the fight against plastic pollution.

UBI discovers new treatment for stroke

The research team at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), in collaboration with international specialists from Spain and the United States, developed a new treatment for stroke that uses the molecule nestorone, normally approved for contraceptive purposes, administered nasally to bypass the blood-brain barrier. Pre-clinical trials in animal models showed that a single dose administered during the acute phase of ischemic stroke substantially reduces neuronal lesions and inflammation, accelerating motor capacity recovery. Led by researcher Sara Meirinho, the study was published in the journal Drug Delivery and Translational Research. Although the results are promising, the treatment is still in the pre-clinical phase, with new toxicology studies and human clinical trials needed. The researchers point out that this neuroprotective approach may also be applied to other diseases of the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis.
