The storms that hit Rio Grande do Sul in recent days left two dead and caused destruction in 21 municipalities in the gaucho state. The Civil Defense report recorded 23 occurrences of hail, nine of heavy rain, and three of windstorms throughout the state.
In the south of Rio Grande do Sul, a 72-year-old man was found dead on Saturday morning in Arroio Grande. The pickup truck he was in was dragged by the current after the driver tried to cross a flooded section the night before. The vehicle's driver, 65 years old, managed to escape by grabbing onto trees and was rescued and taken for hospital care.
In Porto Alegre, an 8-year-old boy died after a tree fell on a wooden house during the storm on Friday morning. The case happened in Vila Barranco, in the Porto Seco region, in the North Zone of the capital. His mother and brother were injured. According to Civil Defense, the occurrence is related to the strong winds that hit the city.
