Milk producers on São Miguel fear losing 15 million euros due to falling prices

Diário de Coimbra29 August 2026 at 22:00

Milk producers on São Miguel, in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, express great concern over the industry's intention to lower milk prices by the end of the year. Farmers warn that this measure could result in significant financial losses for the sector.

According to data provided by the producers, the drop in prices could represent a negative impact of approximately 15 million euros on the local economy. This figure represents a considerable threat to the sustainability of the island's dairy farms.

The Azores are a region of great relevance for milk production in Portugal, with São Miguel being one of the main centers of this agricultural activity. The relationship between producers and the processing industry has been marked by tensions regarding the prices charged.

Producers argue that the price reduction compromises the viability of their farms, which already face high production costs. The situation puts at risk thousands of jobs directly and indirectly linked to dairy activity on the island.
