Obituary: Penidão, a Life of Reporting

Marcos Parreiras Horta Penido, known as Penidão, died in the early hours of this Friday at age 74 at Hospital Silvestre, in Cosme Velho, Rio de Janeiro. He had been suffering from heart failure for several years, and his health condition had worsened recently.

Penidão was one of the most well-known sports journalists in Brazil, covering football for decades. He was present at nine World Cups, following training sessions, team camps, locker rooms, trips, and matches. He was a beat reporter for Santos and a fan of Botafogo long before becoming a journalist.

One of the most memorable stories of his career happened during the 1995 Brazilian Championship final at Estádio do Pacaembu. Penidão, who couldn't watch the final moments of the match, turned his back to the field while Santos was pressuring Botafogo. When he looked back, Botafogo was already the Brazilian champion. He watched the celebration in the locker room and returned to Rio with the delegation, living as a fan one of the nights he had waited for years.
