Vuelta: Tadej Pogacar's abandonment after a fall is confirmed

SAPO Notícias29 August 2026 at 16:32

The Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar, from the UAE Emirates team, abandoned today the 81st edition of the Vuelta a España after suffering a fall during the eighth stage of the race, which was running between Puçol and Xeraco. The abandonment happened when the rider held the lead of the general classification by a wide margin.

Pogacar was the main favorite for the overall victory in the Vuelta, having demonstrated clear superiority in the previous stages and accumulated a significant advantage in the general classification before the incident that forced his abandonment.

This abandonment represents a significant blow to the Slovenian rider's aspirations, who intended to add another Grand Tour to his record, having already won the Tour de France twice.

The race now continues without its main favorite, which opens the door for other candidates to fight for the final victory in the general classification of the Vuelta a España.
