Journalist Marcos Penido dies

Journalist Marcos Penido, 74, died on Saturday after heart failure. He leaves behind his wife Rita and two stepchildren. Penido was a Botafogo fan and leaves admirers among those he worked with in Rio de Janeiro newsrooms.

The journalist worked at newspaper O GLOBO for 32 years, from 1983 to 2015. Before that, he began his career at Jornal do Brasil, where he won his first Esso Award for coverage of the 1982 World Cup, his first World Cup in the profession.

At O GLOBO, Marcos Penido won another Esso Award for revealing a match-fixing scheme in Rio de Janeiro football in 1994, working on a reporting team that exposed this process.

Penido covered nine World Cups, from 1982 to 2014. A colleague remembered him as "a reporter," dedicated to finding news, saying that "nowadays we have fewer and fewer in journalism" professionals like him.
