The President of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, defended in Luanda, on Saturday the 29th, that financing the peace agenda in Africa and the goal of silencing the guns by 2030 cannot continue to depend primarily on external resources. Youssouf considered that the continent must assume responsibility for its own financing of these initiatives.
The official was speaking during the 26th Extraordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council, held in the Angolan capital. The meeting brought together representatives of the member states of the continental organization to discuss issues related to peace and security in Africa.
Silencing the guns by 2030 is one of the strategic objectives of the African Union, which has faced various armed conflicts in different regions of the continent. The dependence on external funding for peace operations and conflict mediation has been a recurring concern of the organization.
Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has been leading the African Union Commission since February 2025, after being elected to the position previously held by Moussa Faki.
