Instead of trying to manufacture fake notes, he decided to deceive the very company responsible for printing part of the Portuguese money. Reis's scheme consisted of forging an official order for the printing company to produce genuine notes, which he then put into circulation. This innovative and bold approach made the case particularly notable in the world of financial fraud. The name of Artur Virgílio Alves Reis became permanently associated with one of the greatest frauds in Portuguese history.
