YMTC wants to overthrow Samsung and lead the global NAND market in 2027

Notícias Portugal29 August 2026 at 12:15

The Chinese manufacturer Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) announced the ambition to become the world's largest NAND Flash memory producer by the end of 2027, surpassing giants like Samsung and SK Hynix in just one and a half years. The company recently achieved the top 3 globally in NAND shipments for the first time and is preparing for an IPO on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, with expectations to raise approximately 4.9 billion dollars to expand production and develop new technologies.

In terms of market share, YMTC represents approximately 14% of NAND bits shipped globally, while Samsung holds 25% and SK Hynix 22%. The company currently ranks fifth globally in revenue, despite outperforming Kioxia in shipment volume. YMTC's shipments increased 22% year-over-year and 5% quarter-over-quarter, while Samsung redirected part of its capacity to DRAM products.

The company faces a dual challenge: significantly increasing its production and ensuring that a greater proportion of its shipments go to high-value products, especially for servers, where demand for enterprise SSDs represented 48% of NAND bits shipped in the last quarter. To achieve leadership, YMTC would need to increase its share by 79%.

The company's IPO could generate up to 33 billion yuan, resources that will be invested in upgrading factories and developing next-generation products. However, the market presents long-term risks, as building new factories takes time and rapid expansion could saturate the market. The company also continues to face restrictions on access to some advanced technologies due to United States sanctions.

Swappie starts selling refurbished Macs in Portugal

The Finnish company Swappie, specialized in the sale of refurbished electronic devices, will start selling refurbished Macs in Portugal from August 31. The decision comes in a context of Apple price increases, which in July raised the prices of tablets and computers by 20% due to global demand for chips for AI data centers. The company previously tested selling refurbished Macs in Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark, with results considered "successful." Prices will be dynamic and may vary daily, depending on supply and demand. The company estimates that a refurbished 15-inch MacBook Air will be sold starting at 1,300 euros (new costs starting at 1,700 euros). Swappie achieved revenues of 249 million euros in 2025, a 20% growth compared to the previous year, and in the Portuguese market, profitability grew tenfold between 2024 and 2025.
